History #06 – Recognitions

Kiwanis Club of Louisiana State University

Kiwanis International offers several recognitions for achievements by individual members.  The George F. Hixson Fellowship includes five of our members or spouses in whose names $1,000 or more were contributed to the Kiwanis Children’s Fund (was the International Foundation until being renamed in 2016).  The Walter E. Zeller Fellowship has recognized eight members in whose names $1,250 or more have been contributed specifically to the eliMiNaTe project to erase maternal and neo-natal tetanus worldwide.  Beginning at 25 years with a certificate and new silver member pin at 5-year intervals, the Legion of Honor includes thirteen from our club who have been members of one or more Kiwanis clubs for 25 or more years.  Kiwanis also recognizes eight of our members who have purchased Life Membership (15 times the annual International dues) either themselves or through contributions of friends or the club.  To encourage members to recruit others, Kiwanis has awarded a Ruby K pin to five of our members who have recruited five or more new members during their Kiwanis careers. A list of recipients of these Kiwanis International honors is available here.

Locally, in 2017, our club was recognized as a Model Club by Kiwanis International for completing our commitment to contribute $750 per member over a multi-year span to the eliMiNaTe project.  To promote attendance at club activities, we encourage members to adopt a goal of attending at least 75% of the time.  As a result, we recognize members who have achieved perfect attendance (100%) either by attending our weekly meetings or by substituting “make-up” attendance at meetings of other Kiwanis clubs, meetings of sponsored youth groups (Circle K clubs in colleges, Key clubs in high schools, Builders clubs in middle schools. K-Kids in elementary schools, or Aktion clubs for mentally or physically challenged youth), board meetings or service or fundraising projects of our club or any of these other groups, and Kiwanis-related conventions.  Our champion in that regard was Ralph Schmidt with 50 years.  Olin Dart had 35 years, and Morris Welch has 47 years and is still counting.
